Show: true / Country: Myanmar / Myanmar
As UCA News reported on 2 September 2021, churches in Chin State and elsewhere have become targets of the regime and its army, whereby church grounds have been used as camps and church buildings as headquarters, causing desecration and serious damage. Thomas Muller, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, comments: "In Taal village in Falam township, government soldiers threw away Bibles and hymn books in a Baptist church. The same happened in Catholic St Joseph"s church in Chat, Mindat township. More seriously, the homes of nearby Christians were attacked and their cattle killed in some cases. Such action can only increase the levels of distrust between ethnic minorities and the government. It also shows the total disregard the regime and its army show towards places of worship (which are under protection in times of war according to the Geneva Convention). At the same time, it underlines the fact that the regime has no interest in reconciliation with the country"s minority groups, and any thought of a federal future for Myanmar remains a distant dream."
