As reported by the New York Times on 15 June 2021, at least 10 people were killed and 20 wounded when‚  a Somali Army training camp (jointly run by Turkish and local forces) came under attack again.‚  A suicide bomber set off an explosion as dozens of new recruits lined up for military enrollment. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility. World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: "The government of Somalia has been battling for more than a decade with Islamist al-Shabaab, who are fighting for control of the country. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia. This recent attack on the army training camp is just one of a series launched this year: In April 2021, al-Shabaab attacked two military bases in the southwest of the capital Mogadishu killing dozens and wounding several others (Al-Jazeera, 3 April 2021). In March 2021, at least three civilians were killed and five were wounded when al-Shabaab targeted the headquarters of the UN and African Union peacekeeping mission forces (AMISOM) located in Mogadishu (Anadolu Agency, 25 March 2021). This latest attack on an army training camp comes as political tensions seemed to be easing after President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed dropped a divisive bid to extend his term in office." Yonas Dembele concludes: "It has become clear over the years that the main objective of al-Shabaab is to weaken the security forces deployed within the country in order to destabilize and take control of the nation. These incessant attacks threaten the livelihood and safety of all civilians (particularly the few who are Christian), who look to the security forces for protection."
