On 28 March 2022, a coordinated attack took place in Katari (Kaduna State) targeting a train travelling from Abuja. As BBC News reported on 5 April 2022, a section of rail-track was blown up and unidentified gunmen killed 8 passengers and abducted possibly as many as 168 others. On 31 March 2022, large numbers of heavily armed men entered Gurara, attacked communities just a few kilometers from Abuja and fought with government forces, as reported by TMS News on 4 April 2022. Frans Veerman, Managing Director of World Watch Research, thinks that recent events may indeed mark a watershed for Nigeria:‚  "It is clear that attacks are becoming more daring. It would also seem that the country is now having to face up to a powerful triumvirate (some would say, a three-headed monster) as Boko Haram/ISWAP, Fulani militia and so-called bandits are evidently acting in full cooperation with one another. An article in Punch NG published on 5 April 2022 even calls this a "˜marriage", saying that "˜the nature of recent attacks on government installations and public systems in Kaduna State showed that the hitherto bandits have joined forces with the Islamist State of the West African Province. [Usman Yusuf, a member of the Northern Elders Forum] expressed fears that the marriage between ISWAP fighters and bandits would be the most lethal threat to the existence of Nigeria."" Frans Veerman continues: "Some observers point to the Taliban take-over of Kabul and forecast a similar fate coming for the capital of Nigeria. While some media reports tell of government forces fighting off attacks, other sources, including a former Chief of Defense (as reported by TMS News above), are claiming that Nigeria"s armed forces have in fact been colluding with the attackers and facilitating their movements. If true, and the evidence is sometimes hard to deny, and if Abuja becomes a successful battleground for "˜the triumvirate", both ordinary Muslims and Christians are in for a very oppressive future controlled by an aggressive Islamist power."
