BBC News reported on 6 June 2021 that an armed group raided and burned down homes and the local market in Solhan, a village in northern Burkina Faso in the early hours of 5 June 2021. At least 160 civilians were killed in the indiscriminate shooting. In another attack on 4 June 2021, 14 people were reported to have been killed in the village of Tadaryat, about 150km north of Solhan. President Roch Kabore declared three days national mourning. World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: "Burkina Faso, just like many of its Sahelian neighbors, is facing a deepening security crisis as Islamic militants carry out raids and kidnappings across much of the region. Since the first jihadist attacks in 2015, the nation has seen an increase in violence often intertwined with inter-community conflicts. In May‚  2021, about 30 people were killed in an attack in the east of Burkina Faso. In the same month, the Burkinabe army launched a large-scale operation in response to a resurgence of militant attacks. Unfortunately, despite such counterterrorism measures, the killing of civilians has continued unabated. While it is not clear which group is responsible for these recent killings, they serve as a reminder to Christians that radical Islamic hostility is increasing and the situation is unlikely to improve in the near future."
