On 9 May 2022, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) issued a
press statement concerning the visit by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, on 20 April 2022 (CAN, 9 May 2022). The statement expresses fears that the prosecutor "will not take with any seriousness" the disproportionate victimization and persecution of Nigerian Christians.
Frans Veerman, Managing Director of World Watch Research (WWR) comments: "CAN is deeply disappointed that the ICC prosecutor only met with government officials in Abuja. The Association wrote twice to his office in 2021 but never received any form of reply. Denied the possibility of speaking directly with the ICC in April, the press statement lists conservative estimates for the number of Christians killed for their faith in the years 2013 to 2021, totalling approximately 25,000. The press statement claims ‚ that the Christian community is bearing the brunt of religious violence in the country. This is confirmed by WWR"s detailed investigation of the most recent years (reporting on all citizens killed in jihadist violence) which clearly shows that the number of Christians killed is significantly higher than the number of Muslims killed in states where Muslims are in the majority. This should be taken into consideration by the prosecutor as a matter of course."
