The Messianic community in Israel has been rocked by a murder in Modi"in. Kehila News reported on 18 March 2020 that a Christian in his seventies was murdered after being invited to visit a Christian friend with his wife. The violent attack with a brick from a 28 year old member of the same Messianic Jewish congregation came totally unexpectedly. According to an article dated 12 March 2020 by Modi"in News, published by the Caspari Center, the attacker claimed that he was being persecuted by Messianic Jews. Modi"in News also mentioned that the man"s sense of reality may have been affected by psychiatric medication and that he was suffering from a "˜psychotic episode". According to a Maoz Israel report in April 2020, when a neighbor asked what he was doing, the attacker shouted: "˜They are missionaries!". He was subsequently arrested and his charges carry a maximum sentence. Henriette Kats, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, comments: "According to sources in Israel, it is uncertain whether this can be classed as an anti-Christian attack, since the attacker was a fellow Christian and was apparently suffering from psychosis. However, the alleged accusation that the elderly man and his wife were "˜missionaries" seems to point to a religious component, as does the fact that the attacker apparently said that he felt persecuted by Messianic Jews. This must, however, be viewed in the context of the attacker's psychological state and the attorney has requested his examination by a psychiatrist. Whatever the reason for the murder, this is a very tragic incident for the Messianic community in Israel."
